The challenge

Intensive care units have particular demands. The devices used there must work reliably and should be easy to operate with as little room for error as possible. The bar for developing a new infusion pump is correspondingly high. It calls for an intuitive touchscreen that can be operated with gloves on, where any accidental change to the medication dose is ruled out as far as possible. Making the device autoclavable, so that it can be sterilised in a pressure vessel, is another sensible feature.

The solution

For a brief like this, the NewTec team is happy to take on the complete systems engineering, including requirements engineering and every sub-component such as the pump, the control unit and the battery packs. Our medical and safety specialists develop both the hardware and the software, along with parts of the mechanics. To make sure the user interface works across very different countries, with their varying scripts, languages and ways of perceiving colours and icons, we carry out thorough usability studies.
