The challenge
Based on the GSM mobile standard, the rail-specific GSM-R standard is used to handle much of the communication in railway operations digitally. GSM-R provides its own network, shielded from other networks, which can be used for example to connect the train driver with the signaller, to send information to entire groups of recipients and to transmit emergency calls. In railway tunnels, the safe operation of digital radio is particularly important, for instance so that emergency calls can be made reliably.
The solution
